Nice Guy Never Seen Before: Episode 2@9:58 PM

Reaction -

Good, solid episode for a good solid drama. Not as reveling as the pilot, but still good none the less. I still desperately want to kill Han Jae Hee... She deserves to flat out die. Nothing's sacred to her. Freaking A. She deserves whatever is coming to her next. Legit. This episode was actually significantly more happy than the last with the flashbacks to Jae Hee and Ma Ru's past, and there were actually some really sweet one-liners. That made this process all the more bittersweet.

Character Development -

In this episode we see Kang Ma Ru's younger self, and we realize through all of this that Ma Ru has always been in essence. Perfection. And dear Lord, he had a lot going for him. The only thing that was wrong in his life, terribly, terribly wrong even more wrong than his sick sister he had to care for was Han Jae Hee. The downfall of man is woman. We also see a more love-struck, actual humane side of Jae Hee which only provides an even more stark contrast to herself. In this episode she lies like it's nothing... Everything she does is for her own selfish gain and to save her own sorry hide. Eun Gi is still rocking her awesomeness. She's in the hospital, but she eats fried chiggen instead of eating the porridge that Park Jong Ha gets her (LIKE I SAID. LOVE INTEREST!!!) Anyway. Without further ado. ONTO THE RECAP!

Recap -

The episode begins exactly where we left off, on the plane with Kang Ma Ru saving Eun Gi. He gets her so she's stable enough to last until they land and get her to the paramedics, but not without some major tension and hurt feelings between Ma Ru and Jae Hee for obvious reasons. He shoots Jae Hee a heartless look, but finds himself imbalanced as he stumbles back to his seat, dropping his fierce facade.

The plane lands and Jae Gil is chattering away in the car about the taboo topic of Jae Hee. Ma Ru is already all shaken up and in shock, yet he's just chattering by himself. "Didn't she marry that rich CEO? You're the only one who wouldn't believe me! You beat me up when I tried to tell you." etc etc. He talks about how Jae Hee used to visit Ma Ru all the time in prison, then progressively the visits became less and less frequent, until at last there were none at all. Ma Ru slams on the breaks and yells at Jae Gil for sitting in the backseat, "Am I your chauffeur?!" (ahh, displacement of anger I see.) Jae Gil freaks out and rambles on about how he had such a privileged life and then Ma Ru gets out of the car and walks off, as hilariously Jae Gil calls after him, "I can't drive!" (I love Gwang Soo.)

As Ma Ru walks off, he's recalling the scene where he first met Jae Hee. Jae Hee is running away from debtors and asks Ma Ru to help hide her, and then Ma Ru talks to her, introducing himself. Jae Hee introduces herself to, to which Ma Ru responds, "I know, you're the prettiest noona in the neighborhood." This depicts a bright and young Ma Ru with dreams to help people and become a doctor, he tells Jae Hee that and it's a bit bittersweet, as you realize this is the very woman who would shatter all those dreams.

We jump to another flashback of when Ma Ru and Jae Hee are older and are in college. They're studying together, and Jae Hee talks about how Ma Ru is popular with the girls and how he's such a great "catch". She subtle-y digging for that confession from him as she does this. My favorite one-liner comes from Ma Ru here. He says, "That catch. Can't noona make that catch?" He does this while "reading" his med book, and completely rejects the idea of any other girl. It's interesting to note here how Jae Hee focuses on the money so much and focuses in on how Ma Ru would be set for life if he just was with that rich girl. Jae Hee here, pinky promises with Ma Ru and makes him promise never to betray her, and to wait for her. Irony, eh?

This leaves Ma Ru in the present, walking down the street looking at the street stall where they had good memories together. He reminds himself he's no longer the Ma Ru he once was. He's now got a very different life, doing whatever he needs to survive.

Again, every episode I just gotta remember Eun Gi is a freaking BAMF. She's doing work and eating fried chiggen in the hospital. She basically says screw porridge and screw hospital food. She'll do as she likes, and if it's fried chicken, then it's fried chicken. She's annoyed about the doctor that helped her on the plane, she rants about how she could have died, and more importantly, he's somehow related to that Jae Hee that she desperately hates (now don't we all?). She receives a call from one of her spies keeping tabs on Jae Hee, she's withdrawn something close to 1 billion dollars. Continue keeping tabs on her, Eun Gi is determined to see Jae Hee's weakness.

We see Jae Hee in her old neighborhood bearing gifts and money as she goes to Ma Ru's house. She sees an image of herself as a child crying in front of his house and as she hears a commotion she goes to observe. Inside, a husband is harassing Jae Gil looking for Ma Ru. He's pissed off, cause Ma Ru must have seduced his wife. Jae Gil corrects the man, informing him Ma Ru would never break up families and that his wife must have been the one to lie and tell Ma Ru she was a divorcee. Then he goes back and says wait, Ma Ru is skilled enough to tell the difference. He also informs the husband that it's honestly not Ma Ru's fault that he is so popular, Ma Ru's fanclub from elementary school still exists today, and all it's members combined could form a long line to the outskirts of the village. The husband continues to harass Jae Gil but then the wife finally proclaims that she wants a divorce, so that she can confidently meet that guy again, meaning Ma Ru. The husband is dumbstruck, and they both end up leaving as the wife storms out saying she's going to file for divorce.

Oh wait. Jae Hee is still standing there. She's shocked. "The man that you're talking about... is it Ma Ru?"

Scene cuts to Ma Ru and Choco at the hospital. She's just finished taking a check up, and she should be "okay" now. But she says she's still sick. She complains that she can't drink, she can't club, she can't do anything. She has a good one-liner here too. "Is it really "Life"? Is it living if we only breathe?" Deep. Wooh. She kind of lashes out at her oppa as she blames him for leaving her at that time. She should have just died instead of living as if she's dead. "If I die, it's all your fault!" she says. She feels a bit apologetic of sorts at this point as Ma Ru remains silent, just with a hurt expression on his face. "Give me a piggyback ride oppa. I'm tired from yelling at you."

The scene goes back to Jae Hee and Jae Gil but I'm not going to have a screenshot of them. Cause screw that. I'm highly impartial to piggyback ride scenes. SKINSHIP! Ugh. Eww, that's kinda a nasty word for it... even though it's cute cause it's like... sibling love! But at this point, Jae Gil explains to her why Ma Ru became a gigolo. It was out of a necessity, at the same time he came out of jail, his dad died with a huge looming debt, and there was so many hospital bills for Choco. And there was no way, no job that an ex-convict could get that could have shouldered all that need for money. He tells her Ma Ru is only alive because of Choco. He also ends with asking why God is so cruel to Ma Ru a parallel to a question that Jae Hee asked Ma Ru in the first episode. She then asks Jae Gil why they haven't moved away from this dump, he responds it's because they have to stay here so Jae Hee noona can still find them, said Ma Ru. Everything is all for you... you dumb whore. You don't deserve him.

Ma Ru returns home, and puts Choco to bed. Jae Gil then gives the money that Jae Hee gave to him. This is the "debt" that she owes Ma Ru. And Ma Ru goes chasing after Jae Hee who's broken one of her heels and is hobbling down the road with only one shoe. Reminiscent of the same way she first met Ma Ru. She returns to her car and remembers the night Ma Ru took the fall for her. It's an extension of the scene we saw in episode one. Ma Ru covers Jae Hee with his shirt, and they embrace, Jae Hee promises she'll remember this debt and pay it back with the rest of her life.

Eun Gi is waiting for Jae Hee when she comes home. She confronts her about the 1 billion dollars and what she did with it. She also tells Jae Hee her strategy that she put spies to keep tabs on what she did ever since her own mother was kicked out and Jae Hee took her place. It was cause of Jae Hee that her mother died a premature death and was kicked out, and she'd make sure to get Jae Hee kicked out as well. It seems as Eun Gi is dominating the conversation as Jae Hee lies weakly, saying that it's because he saved Eun Gi's life. As Eun Gi pushes Jae Hee into a corner, she finally bares her fangs and lies to Eun Gi telling her that Ma Ru threatened her with a secret about Jae Hee's drug possession in America that could have led to the downfall of the company.

We finally see a more humane side of Eun Gi as well, that she wasn't always this BAMF that did what she wanted. She actually loved before too. It actually wasn't her with the drug possession, she took the fall for her boyfriend at the time that she loved. (HMM... WHERE HAVE WE SEEN THIS BEFORE?) At this point I am like confident Eun Gi and Ma Ru are made for each other. Seriously, just screw Jae Hee and kill her already. Ugh... I hate that bitch. But I digress. Her boyfriend is begging for her to do this for him, it's his second offence, and it'd only be her first, nothing would happen to her. And he gives her the condition that his dad will help Eun Gi out of the situation of their failing company. The flashback draws to a close and Eun Gi calls her ex. He has a family now, with a wife and a baby. "I want you to know that I didn't take the fall for you because of the condition that you'd save my family's failing company. It was because I loved you. It's because, I, Seo Eun Gi, loved you, Kim Jung Hoon (cameo by Danny Ahn) so much." (paraphrased cause I can't remember the exact ending to the quote).

Boom. Handphone gets dropped into the fish tank, and then commence family dinner! (+ 2 lawyers, which is kinda extremely odd.) Over dinner Eun Gi informs Jae Hee she's reported Ma Ru to the police cause they need to stand against the "bad guys" and fight them straight on. Oh, but you have to be the one to report him since you're the direct victim. OOH. POINT FOR EUN GI. I'd be cheering, but you just hurt Ma Ru AGAIN. God, he just has bad luck with women. Speaking of him, he's outside their house, and he watches Eun Gi leave the house, then works up the courage to leave the money in their mailbox. But then he gets a frantic call from Choco saying that the police are at their house, looking for him... and... and... could it be?

And no she fucking didn't. Han Jae Hee actually had the nerve to report Ma Ru and put him at risk to be in jail because of her. AGAIN. What the hell is wrong with her? "Man as precious as my life" MY ASS. OBVIOUSLY NOT. Anyway... Choco is hysterical. And cries at Ma Ru not to go with them, and that he's not that kind of person, he didn't do it and he should tell them such. He tries to calm her down, assuring her that it'll all be okay, and that they'd find nothing wrong because she's right, he's not that type of person. Ma Ru tells her to go back inside, and that she'll get sick again if she stays out in the rain, the doctor told her not to. She pulls the, "Then what if I die?" To which Ma Ru finally responds, "Then die. Get hit by all this rain and die, you little punk."

Ma Ru and Jae Hee meet at the police station. The police ask Jae Hee to confirm her statements again to the offender. There's a pregnant silence as Jae Hee considers throwing Ma Ru under the bus again. Letting him take the fall for her again, for her own selfish gain. Finally, she speaks, "Yes, this is the man that threatened me and my family." YOU. FUCKING. BITCH. I like flat out swore when this part came along. Like, I honestly cannot believe this damn bitch. She like deserves to die. She has no heart. She has no soul, only greed and selfish ambition. Damn her all to hell.

After this whole ordeal, Ma Ru is effing still like delusional as he thinks to himself, "Even if you didn't do this noona, I was planning on understanding you. Even if you didn't go this far, I was going to send you to the person you wanted to go to." HE IS SELFLESS, UNDERSTANDING, AND EVEN HELPING YOU... YOU JFODISFOSDFODSFSD XX.

A couple of things happen in the next couple of scenes. Eun Gi gets torn up by her dad about the business and gets lectured about how if she can't take care of the company properly he'll give it to someone that can, like Jae Hee or her son, and tells her to just run away like her mother did. Damn, harsh daddy. Eun Gi and Jae Hee have a confrontation. Eun Gi tells her that Ma Ru could get off without punishment because of the lack of evidence. She tells Jae Hee that her nickname is "crazy dog" and there's no way she'll let him off though. Where's the money now? Jae Hee throws a curve ball as she tells Eun Gi the money was returned to her, for him not being able to get rid of Eun Gi effectively. Ma Ru is now stuck in jail for the night and Eun Gi drinks a ton of alcohol and works until she passes out on the table.

Ma Ru is released after his night in jail, but once he gets back to his house he finds out that Choco passed out while looking for him and then the village ajumma called the ambulance and they came to take her away. He goes to Choco right away and he replays the harsh words and the moments from the day before in his head. He's thoroughly crushed at being such a terrible oppa. But his features change in the last moments of this scene, signifying a new twist coming quickly to this drama. (YES. FUCKING REVENGE ON THAT BITCH PLEASE.)

The last scene basically is a set up for the next episode. There are two people dirt biking, one of which is Ma Ru and the other is Eun Gi. Eun Gi's bike ends up malfunctioning and as she starts going off the side of the mountain (?) thing, Ma Ru comes off of his bike and catches her hand. Saving her (?) once again. And there is the dramatic cliff hanger.

Rating -

Honestly, this episode had very good one-liners. Really good scenes. And honestly flawless acting, I was especially pleased with Yoo Bi's acting. Really wonderfully heartbreaking scene. Her crying was kinda annoying in that scene, she cries really ugly...ly. (That's not even a word). And I think in the middle of this episode the fact that Moon Chae Won's expression/ eyes were consistently like O_O kinda bothered me. But those are all trivial things, and I still love all the cast.

Also. There's something about this whole drama that I find could have been simply avoided. Think about it, Ma Ru is on his way to be a surgeon, one that'd make more than enough money to take care of Choco and Jae Hee he was on his third year of rotationals... You just had to wait a couple more years and you would've had the easy life Jae Hee without having to constantly battle Eun Gi and without having to hurt anyone. You are a fucking crazy bitch. And now you'll get what's coming to you. BUT I DIGRESS...

I feel like this episode also jumped from one place to another though really fast. Obviously, episode 2, lots of set up as it makes the transition in Ma Ru's character. I really like all the scenes, and Park Si Yeon does a good job honestly, still irking me as a character, making me feel like killing her. I also enjoyed the character development the most in this episode. Expanding upon aforementioned topics. We see Choco as somewhat manipulative, yet just really desperate for her oppa to take care of her, whether it's through tripping him up through guilt or anything else. We see Jae Hee and Ma Ru's back-story, and actually see them when they're happy together. Making it all the more bittersweet. And we see Eun Gi's weakness in her mother and actually see a bit of her humanity and how she was made the way she is. I'm honestly excited since the whole cast is expected to keep this ambiguity in their characters throughout, so it's not like you can completely side with one person (although I think I'm going to think Park Si Yeon is terrible to the end...). So rating wise. Enjoyability/quality.

7/8
