Nice Guy Never Seen Before: Episode 3@9:49 PM

Yay! Episode 3! I'm actually recapping at quite a quick pace, despite the fact that each recap takes me like 2-3 hours to write. Ahh well... the things I will do for Song Joong Ki. This episode had more (dare I say it?) fluff than the previous episodes thus far! Eun Gi and Ma Ru's romance is actually somewhat hitting the pavement running! And what's better is that Eun Gi is actually the one falling in love with Ma Ru! She gets a heart! Something everyone in this drama desperately needs. (whether literal or figuratively) Continue reading under the break for review, recap and ratings. All good things that begin with "R".

Reaction -

Basically some things finally start rolling! The romance plot actually kicks in, and we finally see Han Jae Hee's real reasoning behind her actions. Which is the lack thereof one except that she's selfish and steps on others! Boom. I hate her even more. But the child actor, Jo Hwi Joon, that plays Eun Seok, her son, is adorable! I like the direction this episode is going with this drama!

Character Development -

This drama is definitely going toward the humanization of all the characters. Eun Gi has a successful humanization in this episode with the whole part with her mother and what not, and you feel rather sympathetic towards her. Whereas... Han Jae Hee just sucks as a human being, she could be doing it for her son or what not... But she's still a terrible person that deserves to die. To be honest, Ma Ru is perfectly human in here, he cares about his sister and actually has a somewhat proper lifestyle given his life.

Recap -

This episode begins with a voice-over of Ma Ru giving a rundown of Eun Gi, while a scene is unfolding where a group is protesting outside of TaeSan toward her. She gets egged and flour thrown at her. He says she has no friends, no hobbies (essentially no heart or life) except for being the heir to the TaeSan group. Oh wait, she has one hobby, motorbiking. Thus cut back to previous scene we left off (ish)!

But first, we have to have this creepy scene with Eun Gi talking to her Barbie doll. "Wanna come with Unni?" she asks.

Ma Ru too, he's brooding over his encounters with Jae Hee thus far and is letting off some steam from the disbelief that Jae Hee is again, tightening the rope around his neck. So the two bike for a while, then Ma Ru falls off his bike and Eun Gi loses control, and her breaks don't work. And we're back on track with the present.

Ma Ru catches Eun Gi and after some struggling, gets her back up. Oh, but NO. That girl is freaking suicidal, she tries to go and get Barbie from her motorbike. Ma Ru finds this to be crazy and restrains her, telling her to just get a new motorbike! Eun Gi yells "Omma! Omma!" profusely and Ma Ru decides to retrieve the doll for her. He gets the doll, but as he's coming back up the rope breaks.

Cut to where they're in the hospital. Eun Gi goes to look at Ma Ru after the doctor tells her he has a broken rib and a hurt leg. Ma Ru is sleeping, but right after he wakes up, Eun Gi starts harassing him, assuming that he has ulterior motives for helping her. Ma Ru puts her in her place as he tells her although his parents were illiterate, they at least taught him to say sorry when he was sorry and say thank you when he was thankful. He informs her he did what he did out of his own volition, so it was 100% his own fault, therefore he wouldn't be asking her for anything. He tells her to get out so he can rest. Eun Gi walks out, still in a daze, unable to grasp why a stranger would help her.

Then it goes to a scene where Jae Hee is sitting in a ball pit, and Eun Seok is playing on his own. She heard the scene where Eun Gi was getting yelled at by her dad. Eun Seok comes over and she hugs him, telling him that they are considered heirs too, and goes on this ramble about how he has to catch hold of everything. Take it all. (On a side note, the child actor that plays Eun Seok is freaking adorable.)

Lawyer Ahn is watching all this, and calls out Secretary Jo whom Lawyer Park has been mobilizing to dig up the connection between Jae Hee and Ma Ru. He succeeds in turning Secretary Jo's loyalty to him, telling him all he knows. Secretary Jo ends up lying to Joon Ha, but Joon Ha is still convinced that there is something amiss.

Meanwhile. Ma Ru broods on a nice grassy rooftop. Curiously, it looks a whole ton like the set for Introduction to Architecture hmm... Okay. Yeah there really is no point to this screenshot, I just wanted to note that. LOL.

Eun Gi and her family (+ 2 lawyers) are once again having a meal together. Eun Gi sits there, preoccupied with recalling the scene in the hospital room with her and Ma Ru and is writing down "Kang Ma Ru" repeatedly into her dinner menu. Her trance is broken as Lawyer Ahn gets a phone call from their doctor, telling him that the Chairman is free to get a transplant from Eun Gi. (I'd just like to note Joon Ha calls her out of her trance :> Love line #2) Jae Hee makes a big deal about Eun Gi being the future of the family, putting up the suggestion that SHE should be the one to make the transplant, since she is of no consequence in their world. (Playing the good guy ehh? YOU DON'T FOOL ME. YOU CAN STILL GO DIE.)

Commence a car scene toward the hospital. Jae Hee does some wonderful acting here and cries her eyeballs out about how no one cares for her and Eun Seok and no one recognizes them etc etc. Boo hoo. You should be in jail and still in the slums you piece of trash. The Chairman then declares that they are going to have a wedding procession... Ooh. Eun Gi is NOT going to be happy about this. But point for team Jae Hee. (it's also kinda bothering me that the Chairman is so old, and is played by the actor in IRIS -_-)

Back at the house, Eun Gi finds the doll that Ma Ru left for her on her desk. She has a flashback and it is revealed her mother gave her the doll before leaving the house. The Chairman had previously gotten rid of all of her dolls, but her mother was able to save this one. Her mother tells her to dress prettily and be happy, leave this place and marry a good man. Eun Gi replies that she can never do that and even if she were to die, she'd die here... in her rightful place. After the flashback she goes to Ma Ru's hospital room, but found that he's been discharged already and left her gift behind.

Ma Ru is shown on his way home, but there is someone else standing outside too, Jae Hee but before Ma Ru sees her, Lawyer Ahn pulls her out of the way and tells her to go home. Once home Ma Ru finds Jae Gil and a girl with facial masks on, missing Jae Hee completely. The girl tells Jae Gil that Ma Ru is very good looking. And in a comedic conversation, Jae Gil tries to tell the girl that Ma Ru had plastic surgery done, EVERYWHERE.

Ma Ru heads out after seeing a message from Choco saying that she's gone home to live with her mother and not to contact her again and thanking him for taking care of her this whole time. He tries to call her multiple times, but doesn't get through. Eun Gi  is outside and starts rambling about how their neighborhood is run down and different, were they built from the leftover supplies of another construction project?

Finally, Choco calls back, and there's a lot of banging and loud sounds in the background. It sounds like Choco's in trouble, and Ma Ru rushes to go over to her. But Eun Gi follows along, getting into the car with him, demanding why he wouldn't accept her gift. He tells her to get off the car, since he's not making any rest stops until they get there, and that they wouldn't be back by the end of today.

On the car ride there, because of her incessant noisy-ness Ma Ru hits on her to make her shut up. Saying that his brain must also be hurt since before the accident he'd never have been attracted to a girl like her, but now it's changed to "women with bad tempers and are super picky"... aka Eun Gi. And now Eun Gi wants to get off the car, but he's not making any stops.

They arrive and they find Choco's mom serving at a restaurant. But then her lover (?) comes and starts abusing her, telling her that he just came from jail since her daughter called the police telling them about the domestic violence. Ma Ru kind of just watches for a while, but then steps in when the guy tries to hit her with a chair. Ma Ru starts beating the crap outta him, but then Choco's mother starts beating Ma Ru with a broom, Ma Ru who's still hurt, keels over. Thankfully, Choco appears and pulls her away from him, exclaiming that he's her oppa.

Choco and her mom come to the dock where Ma Ru is recuperating, and Eun Gi is there too, having come to cheer him up, telling him that he was cool, but he shouldn't have stepped in since he was hurt himself. Choco's mom says that between Choco and that man, she'd choose that man. And she tells Ma Ru to take her with her. She starts spouting nonsense about Ma Ru's mother (we find out that Ma Ru and Choco had different mothers) and about their father too, claiming that she didn't have Choco out of love anyway, and she turned her back on Choco the day she left him behind. Choco goes away to pack her bags, crying as Ma Ru rages and tells her that they're leaving. Mom follows suit, but not before telling Ma Ru to only call her after Choco is married, to which Ma Ru responds that he is NEVER calling her.

They ride home, and while in the car, Choco cries until she falls asleep, Eun Gi falls asleep also. But two scenes happen at the same time. During this time, Jae Hee goes to Lawyer Ahn's place and has wine with him. She explains her relationship with Ma Ru and her past about how her mother was a prostitute and how her brother was a gangster and they constantly tried to sell her into a brothel. She lived life like a cockroach, and Ma Ru was her home that was always open to her. (Shoulda cherished him, you XX) The Chairman wakes up also, and finds that Jae Hee is gone.

Jae Hee and Ma Ru arrive at the house at the same time. Lawyer Ahn asks Jae Hee why she trusts him not to tell the Chairman and she responds that it is because he loved Han Jae Hee before the chairman even did. She kisses Lawyer Ahn and Ma Ru sees this, but then averts his gaze, deeply hurt. After Lawyer Ahn leaves, gets out of the car and opens the door for Eun Gi waking her up and also catching Jae Hee's attention.

Jae Hee watches with shock as Eun Gi gets off of Ma Ru's car and tells him that they're going to meet tomorrow, and the day after that. To which Ma Ru just simply half-smiles.

Rating -

WHEW. Establishing the main couple! Yay finally! And also the alternative Lawyer Ahn love line. I don't believe he's a bad guy, he's just ugly... and manipulated by THAT XX. Eun Gi gets further humanized in this episode, with her attachment to the doll and her absent-mindedness as she thinks about Ma Ru, she's finally in love again? The bit with Ma Ru falsely hitting on Eun Gi was rather adorable... But yeah, I'm glad to see the ball rolling with the romance plot.

We'll see how this drama goes. At this point in time, the ratings for Nice Guy caught up with Arang and the Magistrate, the other drama I've really been advocating. But my rating is as follows... Enjoyability/quality!

8/8
